Drive is Miami's most emblematic route, possibly because of a
ll the movies it's starred in, and it's also typically the first location people think of when they hear Miami Beach. Pastel-hued, art deco houses, bright night lights, fancy cars, and, of course, rows and rows of palm trees are just what Ocean Drive's quintessential Miami is about.
Ocean Drive begins at South Pointe just south of 1st Street, near the southernmost end of the main barrier island of Miami Beach, around a quarter-mile west of the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean Drive continues north on 15th Street, southeast of Lincoln Avenue. It's only 1.3 miles north. If you arrive at Miami International Airport in 50 minutes by bus or 35 minutes by car.
It is considered to be the
capital of Art Deco and is home to the
highest concentration of resort-style architecture in the 1920s and 1930s. Ocean Drive architecture is a synthesis of all kinds of designs from various architects.
Start your day at the Art Deco Welcome Center and join a walking tour of the city. You'll get an exciting look into the
history and architecture of the city and visit many of the iconic Art Deco buildings. You're likely to remember a lot of Hollywood hits. Ocean Drive is filled with some wonderful stuff to do.
Get some brunch at the delightful Front Porch Cafe or Ocean Drive staple,
News Cafe, all over 20-year-old veterans of the area. Fill your afternoon with some shopping on the nearby
Lincoln Lane, or let go at the South Beach Pool Party. For a real treat, the western steakhouse and famous
Prime 112 Celebrity Hangout is renowned for its high-quality dry-aged beef, truffle lobster mac and cheese, and Kobe beef sliders. Like other sites on Ocean Drive, there's a list of people watching.
Most of the local hotels open their doors midday for open bar pool parties with star DJs and lots of bronzed, gorgeous women. Try the Clevelander Hotel or HighBar at the nearby Dream Hotel on Collins Ave for a great time and a party.
There are also choices for those hoping for a less drunken day.
Renting bikes is a very popular and enjoyable sport. Ocean Drive is fitted with CitiBike rental stations, or try one of the several locations along the street. It's a perfect family-friendly activity on a day that's not too humid. There are also a
lot of events nearby in Miami that all ages can love. If you're in the south of Fifth Town, go to Marjory Stoneman Douglas Beach Park, where you can lie on the beach or take the kids to the playground.
Ocean Drive has amazing
food spot after spot and award-winning restaurants. High-end diners would enjoy all the tasty indulgences at their disposal. History-Buffs would love to eat at Gianni's Villa in Casa Casuarina, a former fashion designer's home, Gianni Versace. The menu is a little expensive, but the experience is worth it. Mango's Tropical Cafe is a perfect spot to have a vibrant meal. The restaurant and bar host Latin-style live entertainment every night. Seafood lovers are going to enjoy the Ocean Drive staple, A Fish Called Avalon.
