The entity was founded in 1987 by the American conductor, composer, and pianist Michael Tilson Thomas in the city of Miami Beach, following the inspiration of his mentor Leonard Bernstein. The activities take place at the Lincoln Theater in that Florida city. Since its founding, the orchestra has incorporated more than 600 graduates to 160 orchestras around the world. Michael Tilson Thomas divides his time between the London Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony.
The New World Symphony holds an annual concert season between November and May of each year with the participation of the conductor and other guest conductors as well as composers, soloists, and instrumentalists in charge of master classes. Figures such as Luciano Berio, John Adams, Oliver Knussen, Thomas Adès, Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, and Thomas Hampson have paraded on its stage. MTT has taken the orchestra on European tours, residencies, and cultural exchanges with the Academia de Santa Cecilia in Rome and enabled its debut at Carnegie Hall in New York.
On January 25, 2011, the entity inaugurated a theater specially designed by the architect Frank Gehry called the New World Campus, with a room for 757 spectators and experimental devices with advanced technology.
