New World Symphony

Het gezelschap werd in 1987 opgericht door de Amerikaanse dirigent, componist en pianist Michael Tilson Thomas in de stad Miami Beach, geïnspireerd door zijn mentor Leonard Bernstein. De activiteiten vinden plaats in het Lincoln Theater in die stad in Florida. Sinds de oprichting heeft het orkest meer dan 600 afgestudeerden opgenomen in 160 orkesten over de hele wereld. Michael Tilson Thomas verdeelt zijn tijd tussen het London Symphony Orchestra, het San Francisco Symphony Orchestra en de New World Symphony.

De New World Symphony houdt elk jaar een concertseizoen tussen november en mei, met de medewerking van de dirigent en andere gastdirigenten, evenals componisten, solisten en instrumentalisten die masterclasses verzorgen. Figuren zoals Luciano Berio, John Adams, Oliver Knussen, Thomas Adès, Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell en Thomas Hampson hebben opgetreden op haar podium. MTT heeft het orkest meegenomen op Europese tournees, verblijven en culturele uitwisselingen met de Academia de Santa Cecilia in Rome mogelijk gemaakt en zijn debuut mogelijk gemaakt in Carnegie Hall in New York.

Op 25 januari 2011 opende het gezelschap een theater dat speciaal was ontworpen door architect Frank Gehry genaamd New World Campus, met een zaal voor 757 toeschouwers en experimentele apparaten met geavanceerde technologie.
